Sergio and his father Simão haven’t seen one another for more than 20 years. As the 2014 World Cup is about to begin, the filmmaker returns from Madrid to his hometown of São Paulo hoping to spend the month watching games with his dad. But as the days go by, it seems less and less likely that they’ll find themselves inside a stadium. Using mere fragments of a deeply suppressed and stoic father/son relationship against the peripheral euphoria of the football matches, the film forgoes the superficial pleasures of sport for something altogether richer.
Director
Born in 1970 in São Paulo, Sergio Oksman studied journalism in Brazil and film in New York. He made several short documentaries including A Story for the Modlins (2012), which earned him various prizes such as the Best Documentary Award at Karlovy Vary and the Goya in the same category in 2013. Sergio Oksman has also directed feature-length films, among them A Esteticista (2004) and Goodbye America (2006). He is currently based in Madrid where he teaches film and heads Dok Films Productions.
