Gary Tarn’s deeply affecting début feature tells the story of French artist and filmmaker, Hugues de Montalembert. In New York City in 1978, de Montalembert was blinded during a violent assault. Tarn combines the artist’s powerful and poetic voice with stunning visuals and a haunting original score to cinematically articulate the immediate and longer-term consequences of this devastating loss of sight. As de Montalembert reflects on his singular perception of the world, a portrait emerges of a unique man and his extraordinary reaction to a life-changing trauma. Tarn’s film is a gorgeous and haunting meditation on a life filled with inner vision, for de Montalembert still very much sees the light.
Is a self-taught musician and film-maker, born in London. He started to play and write music aged 7, was performing in a punk band by 14, and by his 20’s was an accomplished producer and multi-instrumentalist. He became captivated by the music of Indonesia, Africa and India. Passions for film led to a career as a media composer, and start to shoot images of his own.
