Kiet Engels is the kind of teacher you’d wish for every schoolchild. She is strict but never harsh. She is loving but never soft. Her patience is endless. Miss Kiet’s pupils have only just arrived in the Netherlands. Many of them are refugees. Everything is new for them and confusing. Some are quarrelsome and stubborn. Miss Kiet’s firm but loving hand brings peacefulness and awakens their interest. She not only teaches the children to read and write Dutch, she also helps them to learn to solve problems together and to respect one another. Gradually the children gain skills and confidence.
Writer/director Petra Lataster-Czisch (1954, Dessau) and cameraman Peter Lataster (1955, Amsterdam) have formed a filming partnership since 1989. They have made several award winning feature documentaries, shorts and dance films. In 2001 they started a production company, Lataster&Films.
In 2012 the IDFA festival honoured Petra and Peter with a retrospective and the Dutch Institute of Sound and Vision released a DVD box with their collected works. Main titles: The Need to Dance (2014), Awake in a Bad Dream (2013), Jerome Jerome (2011), Not Without You (2010), If We Knew (2007).
