After having resisted in the mountains the siege of the Guatemalan army, which killed more than two hundred thousand indigenous people between 1982 and 1996, the Ixil people ended up settling in the northeastern part of the range, which is currently under siege, due to the wealth of gold, water, oil and uranium to be found there.
